ECHIDNA
The Echidna pictured uses the neck of the bottle for
the nose. Split a 38cm poly ball, glue in place for the
eyes. Cover with a stocking piece - pad out a little with
nylon filling. Knot the stocking at the base of the bottle.
Outline the eye shape, then paint the body in a bright colour.
When dry, thread wool tops through the stocking on the back
of the body with a tapestry needle.
Paint in the eyes, add the feet cut from thick card. Pull
the knot at the base throught the card, flatten and glue
underneath. This will make your echidna stand up. Make arms
from felt - this can be padded a little with filling, or
use coloured card.

KOOKABURRA
Take a 1 litre bottle and cut part of the lower section
away as illustrated. This will form the legs and stand for
the bird. Extend the feet with looped florist wire. Cover
by winding 2cm strips of felt around the legs and feet.
Push the neck of the bottle into a 65cm polyball. Cover
the body by glueing on felt or calico which can be painted.
Make the wings by glueing a strip of felt approximately
2cm wide to a 30cm length of 3mm armature wire. Glue a feathered
shape over the other side, decorate with feathers and glue
to the body. The beak is made from felt and “fun foam”.
Add the shapes for the eyes, then glue on 20mm joggle eyes.

Make the wings (above) by wrapping
armature wire in felt strip and pasting feathers on a cut
felt wing shape |
PLATYPUS
The model illustrated was extended by placing a 2 litre into
the base of a second bottle approximatley 10cm high.
Attach the 76mm poly ball head by screwing it onto the neck
of the plastic bottle. The head and body can be covered with
felt, fabric, or a nylon stocking piece. In the illustration
the head has been covered to look like a baseball, or soft
ball. The tail, beak and arms can be made from coloured card,
or fun foam. The tail will help the model to stand. Glue on
30mm joggle eyes. |
EMU
- Use the top section of a 2 litre bottle
- Join 2 pieces of florist wire, wind around the bottle
neck, firmly at first, then just a little more loosely.
The spring should partly spring off the neck.
- Cut strips of black and brown crepe approximately 2cm
wide, fringe, glue around the bottle, slightly overlapping.
Continue up around the head and neck.
Glue
on 10mm joggle eyes.
Make a beak and feet from yellow fun foam.
The legs are made from black stripping - 25mm.
Take two pieces, concertina fold to required length.
NB: The spring neck will make the head wiggle. |
